Cayman Brings Down the Smoke Screen
Acting on a proposal that has been on the agenda of the National Drug Council, the Cancer Society and the Public Health Department ,the Minister of Health Hon. Gilbert McLean announced that Legislation to ban, prohibit and control Tobacco is being considered by the Government.. The Minister plans to publish a white paper which will allow the community to participate in the decision process, but strongly feels that there will be ample support to take this motion to the Legislative Assembly to become Law. One night 10 teens decided that it would be a good idea to sit on the back of a post office and smoke a bowl of marijuana. While one of the teens were taking a hit on the bowl a person walked behind her and tried to take the bowl away. "Wait your turn" she yelled. "I don't think i have to" the officer replied. All ten teens were arrested with possession of marijuana on federal property, and trespassing on federal property. More.

As we approach the end of another school year and make way for the well anticipate summer break, one of the major issues that educators, parents and policy makers will continue to wrestle with over these ten weeks is drug testing in schools.
Like most social issues, drug testing in schools has avid supporters for and against, and invariably those weighing the balance in the middle. Questions of right to privacy, methods of testing, legal implications for minors, are just a few of the technically challengeable areas. In June of 2002 the US Supreme Court rules 5 to 4 in favour of testing in middle and high schools, of students participating in “competitive extracurricular activities”, sports, arts, socials etc. More.
